About Reader & Moon

A practice built on experience, not theory.

Postgraduate grounding in business administration and managerial finance, sharpened by more than five years of hands-on business leadership — including full accountability for a technology company as its chief executive.

Our story

Why the name matters.

A reader looks closely and without flattery. A business, read properly, tells you what it needs long before a crisis makes it obvious — in its margins, in its customer patterns, in the questions its people have quietly stopped asking. Most of the value we add comes from reading carefully before recommending anything at all.

The moon is the other half of it. Businesses do not grow in a straight line, and rarely on the timetable their founders hoped for. They move through phases, and much of the work of building one gets done at hours when nobody is watching. Reader & Moon exists to be useful through those phases — steady, patient, and honest about how long real change actually takes.

The company was incorporated in New Zealand on 8 January 2026, but the practice behind it is considerably older. For more than five years our professional team has been building businesses, leading transformation inside large organisations, and advising founders on the commercial decisions that determine their trajectory. Reader & Moon simply gave that work a home and a name.

The Reader & Moon emblem
What we believe
Organisations perform at their best when business strategy, technology and people are aligned around a common purpose.

The principle behind every engagement

It is a simple idea with awkward consequences. It means the answer to a commercial problem is often organisational, and the answer to a technology problem is often commercial. It means we are not much use to anyone if we only look at the slice of the business we were pointed at. And it means we take a systems view — understanding how a company works as a whole so that its teams can solve the right problems, rather than simply delivering the next piece of work.

Background & experience

The road behind the practice.

A consultancy is only as good as the experience it draws on. Ours has been earned founding companies, leading them, and running transformation inside organisations where the stakes were considerable.

January 2026 — Present

Reader & Moon

Business consultancy — Auckland, New Zealand

Reader & Moon was established to bring together the strands of work our professional team had been doing for years: strategic and commercial advice to founders, financial structuring, operating model design, and hands-on technology and delivery leadership. The practice today supports a portfolio of ventures — in several cases running the entire corporate function on their behalf — working as a long-term partner rather than a short-term supplier.

2022 — 2025

Innovay Limited

Co-Founder, then Chief Executive Officer

Our professional team co-founded Innovay Limited in 2022 and, from the end of 2023 until the end of 2025, held chief executive responsibility for the company. Innovay operates in the IT and telecommunications industry, delivering innovative custom software solutions across the IT, telecommunications and education sectors in New Zealand.

The chief executive role carried full accountability for the whole business: setting and defending the strategy, owning the profit-and-loss, building and leading the team, managing client and partner relationships, and making the difficult calls about where to invest and where to stop. Founding a company and then having to run it are two quite different educations, and we had both.

It remains the experience that most shapes how we advise. Sitting in that chair removes the comfortable distance between recommendation and consequence — you live with every decision, including the ones that do not work. It taught us what organisational change genuinely costs, how long it really takes, and why a plan that has not won over the people expected to deliver it is not yet a plan at all. Innovay continues as a Reader & Moon consultancy client today.

Since 2020

Enterprise transformation & delivery leadership

Major New Zealand organisations

In parallel, our professional team has led technology delivery, engineering leadership and operational transformation inside large New Zealand organisations — among them a leading telecommunications provider and a major national retail group — in complex, business-critical environments where failure is expensive and visible.

That work has centred on shifting organisations from reactive delivery towards strategic, product-led operating models: aligning investment, priorities and execution across business and technology functions; improving planning, governance and team effectiveness; and establishing scalable ways of working that strengthen organisational capability rather than adding process for its own sake. It is where we learned to translate strategy into practical outcomes at a scale most consultants only describe.

2019 — 2021

Earlier venture experience

Co-Founder, technology start-up

Before Innovay, our professional team co-founded an earlier Auckland technology venture — the first practical lesson in how much of a start-up’s survival depends on the unglamorous parts: structure, cash discipline, pricing and knowing which opportunities to decline. It is experience we now put directly to work for the founders we advise.

2011 — 2019

International engineering & customer leadership

Global telecommunications sector — Istanbul and Wellington

Our professional team’s career began in engineering and technical project management with a global telecommunications vendor and other operators, working with some of the sector’s largest strategic customers before relocating to New Zealand in 2016 to support the delivery of major customer programmes.

That period built the habit of proactive, data-driven service management and the ability to work across geographically distributed teams — and it left us with genuine technical depth. When we discuss your systems, your infrastructure or your delivery capability, we are not translating from a glossary.

How we hold ourselves

Four commitments we do not trade away.

Honesty first

We tell clients what we actually think, including when the honest answer is that the plan will not work, the numbers do not support the ambition, or the problem is not the one we were asked to solve. Comfortable advice is rarely worth paying for, and a consultant who only confirms what you already believe is an expensive mirror.

Sustainable over fast

Growth a business cannot support is not an achievement — it is a deferred problem. We look for the pace a company can genuinely carry given its cash, its people and its systems, and we would rather protect a business through a slower year than help it win one it cannot survive. It is why the words sit under our name.

Clarity over complexity

Sophisticated analysis should produce simple decisions. If we cannot explain a recommendation to the people who have to act on it, in language they use themselves, we have not finished the work. No slide decks written to impress rather than inform.

Genuine partnership

We take on a small number of clients and stay with them. That means understanding a business properly rather than superficially, being reachable between formal engagements, and caring about what happens after the invoice is settled. We would rather be the adviser a founder calls first than the one they call once.

Let’s begin

Tell us where the business is heading.

Every engagement starts with an unhurried conversation about what you are building, what is getting in the way, and whether we are the right people to help. There is no charge for it and no obligation at the end of it.
